This hamlet was once known as North Tarrytown, but to capitalize on the notoriety of Washington Irving's "Legend of Sleepy Hollow", the town changed it's name. Even the stonework of the entrance gate of the cemetery reflects the adoption.

It is a very large cemetery, dating to 1850, consisting of over 12,000 interments. Washington Irving himself is buried here (overlooking the Old Dutch Church, it's graveyard, and the site of the bridge in his famous story), along with dozens of other moderately well known people. Terrific cemetery architecture is on display in the mausoleums and vaults here. There are at least 5 zinc headstones to be found (and waymarked?!) here. A museum was recently completed on site as well.
There is a terrific view of the Tappen Zee bridge from one of the highest hilltops within the cemetery, near a natural redoubt that had been a lookout point during the War of 1812.
