Tinker is in a sombre mood. He seems to be making mistakes in appraising antiques as well. Lovejoy tries to snap him out of it by giving him a roasting. This backfires and Tinker disappears.
Lovejoy picks up a clue and follows Tinker to Bigbury By The Sea. Tinker is staying with his sister Olive, who runs an upmarket hotel that has a declining trade. The Simpsons, Agatha Christie and Noel Coward have stayed there in their time, but trade is now slack. The banks are about to foreclose and Tinker had hoped to find something worth selling to save the day.
In a highly implausible story, Lovejoy manages to find some missing family heirlooms behind the wall of the bar of the Pilchard Inn. They include letters and cuff links from Noel Coward, a part written story by Agatha Christie, and a necklace belongiong to Wallace Simpson. Tinker can auction these memorabilia and save the hotel.
