The lych gate stands at the end of bridge 186 that crosses the Leeds Liverpool canal and connects the church and the vicarage.

Traditionally coffins were temporarily placed in the lych gate before moving on into the cemetery for burial. The quotation from the psalm is a fitting one for contemplation whilst the coffin is at rest. It is taken from the King James version of the bible and its title is 'The Lord Is Thy Keeper'.
