Danceland, The Early Years
Dancing has always been popular at Manitou Beach and the first dance pavilion was built here, circa 1919.
In 1925 the pavilion was doubled in size and the tenure of band leader Guy Watkins and his Art Harmony Band as summer-time house band last until 1937. Jitney dances midnight frolics and regular dances were very popular.
Wellington & Ollie White became owners in 1927. In 1930 the present Danceland was built at a cost of about $50,000. The new pavilion became famous for the six-inch horsehair mat lying between the dance floor and sub-floor to give extra "spring" when dancing.
In 1938 Ken Peaker and his Bessborough Orchestra too over as house band. He purchased the dance hall in 1941 and continued to run Danceland until selling it to Danceland Co. in 1953. This group operated the hall until 1971.
This plaque is to honour the original partners of Danceland Co.:
John & Helen Alcock, Jim & Esther Gibney, Ken & Margie Gordon, Francis & Lila McArthur and H.V. "Kelly" & Claribel Teal.
