In the greater Peoria area is the Wayne A. Downing Peoria International Airport, which serves the central Illinois area with flights to major hubs all over the country.

The airport is located nearer the suburb of Bartonville, southwest of the center of the city. To get there from the center of Peoria, you can drive I-74 West to I-474 South to Airport Road, then follow signs to the terminal. It is a little out of the way, but it is easier to explain - and fewer traffic lights - than other ways.

Peoria International Airport has a relatively new terminal with 9 gates, opened in 2011. Certainly, everything looks new. There is a central entrance area. Baggage claim is to the left, while tickets and baggage check is to the right. After going up the ramp and passing through security, the gates are left, right and ahead. It's a little sparse on choices of stores and eateries, but, there isn't a lot of traffic at the moment. Near baggage claim, you can get a car rental.

There are two runways: 13/31 is 10,104 by 150 feet (3,080 x 46 m) concrete; 4/22 is 8,004 by 150 feet (2,440 x 46 m) asphalt.

Currently, four airlines primarily serve this airport: Delta, American (Eagle), United, and Allegiant Travel. Destinations include Chicago (O'Hare), Detroit, Minneapolis, Denver, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Punta Gorda, and Tampa/St. Petersburg. Currently, despite the name, there are no direct international flights. Over 200,000 people flew through the airport in a year.

The runways are shared with an Air National Guard facility, home to the 182 Air Wing. The Illinois Army National Guard also operates a Chinnook helicopter.

Peoria saw the first plane land in 1911 at what is now Peoria Stadium. On April 15, 1926, Charles A. Lindbergh delivered the first airmail to the city. Peoria voted to construct a formal airport in 1932.

General Wayne A. Downing (1940-2007) was born in Peoria. When he died, in 2008, it was voted that the airport be named after him.
