The Belgian sculptor Constantin Meunier (1831-1905) created in 1893 the sculpture "Hafenarbeiter" ("dock worker"). The bronze sculpture stands at the southern bridgehead of the Friedensbrücke in Frankfurt, and reminds, that down river of the bridge was located the former Frankfurt Western Harbour, which was in operation from 1885 to 1999.
The figure is slightly larger than life and represents a load carrier in work clothes. To protect the neck from coal dust and to protect against chafing when towing bags of jute fabrics, he wears a kind of hood. The motif of "working people" is considered to be characteristic of Meunier's sculptural work. Similar sculptures are located in Antwerp, Stockholm, Dresden, Copenhagen and in Lima.
The sculpture is a foundation of the entrepreneur Leo Gans, with the help of his his art fund, the city of Frankfurt bought in 1906 two Meunier-sculptures, the "Sämann" (the Sower) and the "Hafenarbeiter".
