The Princess Alice Disaster

In September 1878 the Princess Alice - a pleasure steamer carrying over 600 people - was hit by a collier at Gallions Reach. Almost all the passengers drowned due to the huge amount of raw sewage that was in the water. This was because of the Northern Outfall Serwer used to deposit all the waste from North London on the west side of Barking Creek.

Industry at Barking Creek

The Power Station was constructed at Creekmouth in 1925 and was opened by King George V.


Beckton Gas Works

Beckton Gas Works was built in 1870 and was named after Simon Adam Beck the company founder.


Barking Creek Flood Barrier

The barrier was built to prevent flooding. It took four years to build and was finished in 1983. The barrier is 60 metres tall and weighs 200 tons.
