I recovered this U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service Camera Point cadastral disk at the summit of Calimus Butte and near a triangulation station mark (NY0954). This cadastral disk is used by the Forest Service to monitor environmental conditions to include the growth and development of timber lands of the area, such as this camera point is utilized for. I was told by the lookout watchman who mans the nearby Calimus Butte Lookout House that Forest Service employees mount a digital camera above the cadastral disk and use the disk as a reference point to take pictures and video of the timber lands below Calimus Butte in a 360 degree perimeter as a gauging and monitoring tool. The Forest Service can then compare pictures and video of footage taken a number of years ago with present-day footage to monitor timber lands growth. The cadastral disk lies just a few feet NW from NY0954 triangulation station and is mounted on a two inch metal pipe, surrounded by small rocks and projecting about 4 inches above the ground.
