Yew Tree Farm is a much loved institution in the Lake District and was recently used in the film Miss Potter. Its signature feature is its spinning gallery to the left of the farmhouse, and captured in this watercolour painting by Alfred Heaton Cooper.

Heaton Cooper was born in Manchester and studied art under George Clausen. His painting took him to Yorkshire, Morocco and Norway. Whilst in Norway he married Mathilde. Unable to earn a living in Norway he returned to Bolton, and later the Lake District. In the Lake District he established himself as one of the dominant Lakes artists. He established an art studio and shop, which still exhibits and sells prints of his works.

The right hand edge of the roof of the spinning gallery is in close proximity to the left hand edge of the roof of the farm house. This places the artist on a low rock just to the front left of the spinning gallery, the headline coordinates for the Waymark. The height of the Calf and Long Crags in the background is artistic exaggeration.
