Lionel Filmore, the black sheep of his hard up aristocratic family, has got Lily Whitmore pregnant and has paid her off. Joe and Fred Skinner see Lionel pay Lily off, from a distance. Joe Skinner admires Lily and marries her, giving the child his name.
Lionel is hoping to marry Victoria, the cousin of wealthy business woman, Bridget Mordaunt. He is hoping to come into wealth upon their marriage. Unfortunately Fred Skinner tries to stop Lionel’s plans and Lionel murders him. Joe is arrested for the murder and put on trial. Lionel marries Victoria, but becomes abusive when he realises he is not to inherit a fortune.
Bridget does not believe that Joe is a murderer and starts to investigate, with the help of Lionel’s brother, Douglas. Douglas finds the murder weapon hidden in the stables and confronts Lionel over the murder.
