The film Miss Potter deals with the early life of Beatrix Potter. Beatrix had, from an early age, been drawing animals and making up stories centred on them. Her parents did not consider it appropriate for a young lady to become an artist, however Beatrix persisted. She offered her stories to Warnes the publishers. Warnes accepted her book, but gave it to Norman Warne, the youngest brother, who had not published before. Despite his lack of experience Norman Warne makes a success of publishing Beatrix’s book.
Eventually Norman Warne and Beatrix fall in love and want to get married. Beatrix’s parents are opposed, but her father comes to a compromise whereby Beatrix comes to the Lakes with them for some time, and if when they return Beatrix feels the same then they can marry. Unfortunately, whilst Beatrix is away Norman gets ill and dies.
Beatrix takes herself away to the Lake District where she buys Hill Top farm and decides to run the farm as a going concern. Whilst there she meets William Heelis, a school friend, who is a solicitor and land agent. William tells her of farms that are being sold for development. Beatrix intervenes and buys the farms to prevent development. This laid the way for the formation of the National Trust. After eight years in the Lake District Beatrix marries William Heelis.
