Criminal boss Melvyn Rattigan is sent down for 30 years, care of evidence from Inspector Gently. He is released on appeal, claiming that Gently fabricated evidence, and that Gently himself is guilty of corruption. Things get worse when the police search Gently’s house, finding a murdered policeman’s notebook and the gun that shot him. Gently is arrested but is released on bail into the custody of lawyer Gitta Bronson. At her house her butler is shot in a case of mistaken identity, the sniper thinking it was Gently.
Some rather nasty Met officers are in charge of the case against Gently. Gently thinks several of the officers are corrupt, and Bacchus has some reservations as well. A retired cop, Don McGhee, comes to Gently’s aid, but Gently later realises that McGhee is deeply involved in the underworld.
Gently decides to go underground. Bacchus and a couple of Met officers track Gently down. The Met officers are corrupt and are there to kill Gently. Bacchus manages to save Gently’s life. Gently, however, wants to go it alone and disarms Bacchus. He takes off in search of Rattigan. He goes to Rattigan’s hotel and is given a note by Rattigan telling him to go to the cathedral. Once at the cathedral a sniper takes shots at Gently. Bacchus, meanwhile, has been to Rattigan’s hotel and found Rattigan assassinated. The sniper in the cathedral is McGhee. McGhee shoots Gently and Bacchus. Gently manages to kill McGhee.
