This sculpture is actually two silhouettes which together make up the whole scene. The background circle with the silhouette of a plains scene with mountains in the background and a river in the foreground has been allowed to rust to a natural brown. The silhouette of the bison in the foreground has been blued or blackened to be a contrasting color.
