Originally known as Iowa Stadium and opened in 1929 is today known was Kinnick Stadium. The stadium is re-named in 1972 for 1939 Heisman Trophy Winner Nile Kinnick, who died during a training flight while serving in the Navy during World War II. The stadium opened in 1929 with the first game being play on October 5 against Monmouth College. The stadium was officially dedicated on October 19, 1929 when Iowa and Illinois battled to a 7-all tie. Over the years the Stadium has under gone several major renovations, fist in 1956 and again in 1983 and 1990. Today, Kinnick Stadium seats 70,585 making it the 7th largest stadium in the Big Ten, and one of the 20 largest university owned stadiums in the United States.
