Named for Lieutenant Marshall who charted this route in 1873, Marshall Pass was used by the Denver & Rio Grande Western railroad to cross the continental divide into Gunnison country and eventually Salt Lake City. The railroad abandoned the route in 1953 and today it is maintained as a gravel road. The road reaches its highest elevation on the continental divide at 10,842 feet.
