Charlotte takes Lovejoy away for the weekend to a school reunion at her friend Hattie Horsham’s house. Apart from accompanying Charlotte, Lovejoy is there to value a clock for Hattie’s father Peter. The family are broke and need to raise cash. The clock has the wrong movement and is worth a lot. However, Lovejoy spots a fish in a case which may be valuable if it is a record breaker and has provenance.

Meanwhile Charlie Gimbert has served notice to quit on Lovejoy. Lovejoy gets Tinker to use his contacts in the planning department to find out what Charlie is up to. Apparently Charlie is selling Felsham Hall to a group that want to form a health farm there. Tinker and Beth are sent to Charlie’s health club, The Ferns, to investigate. Tinker, with the help of the matron finds out who Charlie’s partner is.

The Horsham fish is taken to auction, but doesn’t reach its reserve. Whilst putting the fish on his truck Lovejoy discovers love letters from Billy Jones to Mable Horsham, dated 1917. Billy was the Horsham’s gardener and the family did not approve of the liaison. Mable thinks Billy died at Paschendale.

The grandson of the taxidermist tells Lovejoy that not only did his grandfather stuff the fish, but he also did a carving of the fish for a William Jones of Colchester. Charlotte is despatched to go round all the local antique shops to see if she can locate the carving. The combination of the two fish could do well at auction. Charlotte comes up with a name and address and Lovejoy eventually finds a descendant. The descendant has the fish, but won’t part with it. However the original owner is Billy Jones, and he isn’t dead. Lovejoy reunites Billy with Mable and Billy donates the fish for auction.

Whilst Lovejoy is dealing with the fish, Beth is forging a medieval document purporting to give market rights for the local villagers to hold a market at Felsham Hall in perpetuity. Lovejoy shows this to Charlie’s health club friends and they back down.
