Ferdinand August Bebel (* 22. Februar 1840 in Deutz bei Köln; † 13. August 1913 in Passugg) war ein deutscher Politiker und einer der Begründer der organisierten sozialdemokratischen Arbeiterbewegung in Deutschland. Im Jahre 1869 war er eine Mitbegründer der Sozialdemokratische Arbeiterpartei (SDAP) und von 1892 bis zu seinem Tode 1913 Vorsitzender der Sozialdemokratischen Partei Deutschlands (SPD).
August Bebel verbrachte seine Jugend und Lehrjahre in Wetzlar. Nach dem frühen Tod seines Vaters übersiedelte die verwitwete Mutter verarmt zu ihrer Familie nach Wetzlar, wo August die Volksschule besuchte.
Das Bebel-Denkmal in Wetzlar wurde am 1. Mai 1922 eingeweiht, im Jahr 1933 wurde die damalige Gedenkplakette von Schergen der SA und der SS entfernt. Direkt nach dem Ende des Nationalsozialismus beschloss die SPD Wetzlar an derselben Stelle die Erinnerung an August Bebel zu erneuern und so wurde am 1. Mai 1950 erneut das Bebel-Denkmal aufgestellt. Die Gedenkplakette, die in einem Stein eingelassen ist, zeigt ein Portrait Bebels und trägt die Inschrift:

Ferdinand August Bebel (* 22 February 1840 in Deutz near Cologne; † 13 August 1913 in Passugg) was a German politician and one of the founders of organized social democratic labour movement in Germany. In 1869 he was a co-founder of the Sozialdemokratische Arbeiterpartei (SDAP), and from 1892 until his death in 1913 chairman of the Sozialdemokratische Partei Deutschlands (SPD).
August Bebel spent his youth and apprentice years in Wetzlar. After the early death of his father, his impoverished widowed mother moved to her family in Wetzlar, where August attended the elementary school.
The Bebelplatz Memorial in Wetzlar was Inaugurated on May 1st, 1922, in 1933 the then commemorative plaque was removed by henchmen of the SA and the SS. Immediately after the end of National Socialism, the SPD Wetzlar decided to renew the memory of August Bebel at the same location, it was on May 1st, 1950 when the Bebel Memorial was re-established. The memorial plaque that is embedded in a stone, shows a portrait of Bebel and bears the (translated) inscription:
