The sculpture is always out front of the museum which is situated on Baltimore Pike, just 330 feet northwest from the National Cemetery, all on the same side of the road. The sculpture is to the left of the main entrance atop a brick patio which is in front of a window. The sculpture is pretty amazing given the detail, its size and the medium used. I am somewhat certain it was crafted from a huge and single piece of wood, of which type, I do not know.

The statue is presumably a Civil War solder. The soldier has an unkempt, long and scraggly beard, his proper right hand thrust under his chin, his right lies at his proper left side. An American flag with only the top of the points staff against his proper left, rear shoulder while the flag is cast forward and draped about his proper left shoulder. The flag holds the only color on the sculpture, its blue field quite obvious, the red and white, battle worn and dull. He gazes ahead due east, his capped head slightly elevated, looking tired, haggard but proud. The statue is on a base, about a foot high, his proper right foot only resting the front of his bent foot upon it, the heel elevated above the base. His proper left foot comes off of the base, the front of his foot peering over the edge. The man is life size, approximately 6 or so feet.
