Montpelier was a welcome site for westward bound pioneers headed for California and Oregon in the mid 1840s. They had just conquered one of the steepest ascents and most arduous descents on the trail over Big Hill. Later cut-offs would bypass Big Hill and Montpelier but make the trip far less exhausting for pioneers who came after.
