The March 11, 2011, magnitude 9.0 earthquake off Honshu, Japan resulted in a tsunami observed over the Pacific region and caused tremendous local devastation. The earthquake was the fourth largest earthquake in the world and the largest in Japan since instrumental recordings began in 1900. The tsunami was the deadliest tsunami since the 2004 magnitude 9.1 Sumatra earthquake and tsunami. The Earthquake and tsunami resulted in 18,550 deaths and $210 billion in damage. The above information comes from the NOAA website (visit link) .

On the morning of June 5, 2012, a large concrete dock washed ashore at Agate Beach just north of Newport. The dock was 66 feet long, 7 feet high, and 19 feet wide. A metal placard on the dock was used to confirm that the dock was debris from the tsunami in Japan. In August the dock was cut up and removed from the beach. A portion of the dock was moved here to the Hatfield Marine Science Center as a memorial to the victims of the earthquake and tsunami.

Text of memorial plaque:
This monument is dedicated to those who lost their lives in Japan’s Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami on March 11, 2011.
It honors the multitude of lives saved by the preparedness efforts of the Japanese government and its people.
May this dock’s transoceanic journey remind us of the great power of the ocean to shape our lives, binding us to our natural world, and to each other.
