Op 5 mei 1945 voeren de geallieerden en luchtraid uit op Rijsel(codenaam circus 157). Ze worden echter onderschept door Duitse jachtvliegtuigen. Er volg een zwaar lucht gevecht waarbij de mensen op de grond zelfs panikeren. Kogelhulzen komen bij honderden naar beneden. De Spitfires en de fockewolfs leveren er een gevecht op leven en dood. Vijf geallieerde vliegtuigen worden getroffen. Sergant Karel Pavlik (313 squadron RAF ) neemt een fatale duik.Zijn vliegtuig stort neer tegen de Monteberg.
