The Common is the heart of Wendell. Most buildings in Wendell are Greek Revival in style and can be attributed ot Luke O Leach, the leading local master builder and lumber yard owner. Thru Wendell's simplicity its charm shows thru especially it's unpretentiousness.

John Erving set aside land for the ministerial lot, the first settlers of the town in 1774 decided that the center would be where it is. A natural center, other activities rose in this area. The cemetery was set aside in 1781. The Town House was built in 1846. After the Church decided to have a more modern building which did not include the town meetings. A second center arose in 1848 when the railroad came to the section known as the Depot. Today it is almost gone, the victim of floods and the center on the hill at the Common is again the true center of Wendell.
