The Newfane Village Historic District includes most of the village of Newfane, incorporatins some sity pricipal buildings. Circumscribed by low hills, the village occupies a relatively flat area along Smith Brook in the West River valley. An irregular ring of public buildings surrounds the central common, flanked on the north by a small group of commercial buildings: residential areas radiate from that core.

Newfane Village represents a small rural county seat that developed principally during the relatively short span of the second quarter of the 19th centry and that retains essentially intact its 19th to early 20th century architectural character. The buildings displayed on the village commone are intrepretation of the Greek Revival and Gothic Revival styles.

Pictured with the district are the Court House, Union Hall and Congregational Church
