Margaret McGinty is found hanged and her lodger, Harold Taylor is put on trial for murder. Fortunately for Taylor Miss Marple is on the jury and holds out. A retrial is ordered.

Miss Marple decides to investigate and calls at Mrs McGinty’s house on the pretext of collecting jumble. She collects Mrs McGinty’s belongings from her sister. One of the items is a newspaper with letters cut out. Miss Marple is able to reconstruct a blackmail note. She also finds several programs for a repertory company.

The Cosgood Players are the repertory company, and Miss Marple quickly joins the group, sharing their lodgings. Soon after joining the players an actor, George Rowton is poisoned. One hundred pounds has been paid out from his account, a similar amount was found next to Mrs McGinty’s body. Initially it looks like Rowton killed Mrs McGinty and then killed himself, but Miss Marple thinks otherwise.

Looking at the blackmail note it becomes apparent that it refers to a production of Remember September in 1954. Mrs McGinty was in the production, which flopped on the opening night. Miss Marple finds out that another actress Rose Kane was in the production, but committed suicide leaving an orphan Evelyn. Before she can investigate further another actress is killed by cyanide gas. She was not the intended target, Miss Marple was.

On the opening night of the Players new play Miss Marple confronts one of the younger players, Evelyn Kane, now known by another name. He has a knife, but fortunately Miss Marple has a loaded revolver. Mrs McGinty had tried to blackmail Evelyn Kane. He had forged a cheque of George Rowton, confronted and strangled Mrs McGinty. Rowton had to die because of the forged cheque.
