Dom Salvado (1814 - 1900), a Benedictine monk, arrived in Western Australia in 1846. He was a misionary with inspirational leadership and energy and with Dom Joseph Serra worked with their fellow monks to establish the Benedictine Community of New Norcia, 160km north of Perth.
In the 1850's they also built a new monastery called New Subiaco, named after Subiaco a monastic village in Italy,and now the name of a suburb of Perth in which his statue stands
The life-size statue is of bronze, he is wearing a priests cassock and has a walking stick in one hand and is carrying a bible in the other
