Richard Bayly is told by his doctor that he has a fatal brain tumour. Later that night he is found beheaded by a sword taken from the vicarage Bayly was a property developer who had made himself unpopular with the locals over his plans for Tye House. Tragically the doctor had found out the same evening that there had been a mix up and that his tumour was benign, not fatal.

The next to die is David Whiteley, who is doing up the lodge to Tye House. He is burned to death in his caravan at the lodge. Finally the theatre producer, Simon Fletcher, is killed by an arrow at the village fete.

Barnaby initially thinks that the murders are connected to the development of Tye House. However, he realises that the three men had been at school together, and with the local estate agent, Ian Eastman. Fearing that Eastman may be next, Barnaby visits him. Eastman confesses that the four of them had been in a gang at school. Their initiation rite was to hang a noose around a new member’s neck, and if they did not take the noose off within a quarter of an hour they were in. They did this to one new recruit, Felix, but unfortunately he slipped off the stool and hanged. His death was recorded as suicide.

Barnaby now has a motive, but no clear killer. Felix was the illegitimate son of the post mistress. She is long dead and the father is unknown. Barnaby wonders why a dying man would be killed, and then he realises why. Bayly had confessed Felix’s death to the vicar. If the vicar was the father then the vicar would kill Bayly and the others. Barnaby confronts the vicar, who confesses. Asking for a moment to pray, the vicar makes a dash for the church tower and throws himself off.
