Midsomer Holm is a half way house for released offenders, set up by Lord Holm. Lord Holm has experience of prison himself, having spent time in jail for murdering his wife in the village’s camera obscura.

DCI Barnaby is at a farewell meeting at the pub in Midsomer Holm for reformed con Ronnie Tyler. Jack Colby, the estate manager takes Tyler to the station and shows him an anonymous note that he has received. Tyler gives Colby Barnaby’s phone number. Colby and Barnaby used to be sergeants together until Colby and his wife Gina suddenly resigned. The resignation was prompted by the case of the Friday nighters. The Friday nighters would get Lady Holm to come to the police cells for sex. Colby had blown the whistle on their activities leading to some broken police careers.

Jack Colby is flagged down on his way home, looses control of his vehicle and crashes. As he gets out of the vehicle he is bludgeoned to death with the handle of the camera obscura. When Barnaby investigates he finds that Colby was not sleeping and worrying about something. Looking at Colby’s note pad he realises that Colby had written to him. On learning that Midsomer Holm has had a new postman for the last month, one Lionel Poulter, one of the Friday nighters. Barnaby rushes to the post office to retrieve the letter before Poulter can destroy it.

Barnaby finds out that Poulter had met a new resident, Eddie Marston just before Colby’s death. Marston is a career criminal and Barnaby thinks he should not be in Midsomer Holm. Before he can tackle Marston, he is found dead in the camera obscura, again bludgeoned by the handle. The pathologist tells Barnaby that Lady Holm was also battered to death by the same handle. Barnaby deduces correctly that one person murdered all three people. As Lord Holm was in custody when Martson was killed, it means that Lord Holm did not kill Lady Holm.

If Lord Holm is innocent then suspicion falls on Gina Colby. She was a police inspector at the time of Lady Holm’s death. It was she that found Lord Holm with Lady Holm’s body. Barnaby goes on to deduce that Gina Colby is the murderer. She murdered Lady Holm because her husband had become a Friday nighter himself. Her husband was killed because he was going to tell Barnaby about the murder. Marston had known about Poulter and Colby being Friday nighters and had to go.
