Waconda was a stop on the Oregon Electric Railway, an interurban rail line that ran from 1907 to 1945. Waconda's station, shown in the photos, was built in 1907-1908 and provided service until Oregon Electric ceased passenger operations in 1933. The south end of the building (foreground in the photos) housed the electrical equipment that provided power to the line. The north end served as a ticket office and waiting room. For my photo, I am facing north.

The exact date of the vintage photo, provided courtesy of the Salem Public Library's Ben Maxwell Collection, is unknown, but based on the cars and condition of the building, it appears to date to the 1930s.

A post office was established in Waconda in 1912 and in 1915, the area's population was 177. Today, all that remains of the community is the abandoned railroad station and a few houses.
