There are two plaques on the casing of this restored pump apparatus, one giving details of the depth of water, the other a commemorative plaque mentioning the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

The depth details are:

               "This well is 70 feet deep
                     with a further
               100 feet of artesian bore,
                 making 170 feet in all.
                The well was dug during
                 the hot summer of 1921"

..and the commemoration quotes:

                    To Commemorate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee
               the Pump and Well were restored to working condition
                           by Goldhanger Parish Council
                     Funded by The Village with support from
                             Essex Environment Trust
                 Maldon District Council and Essex Heritage Trust
                         Opened by Cllr.Robert J.S.Long
                    Chairman of the Maldon District Council
                                  2nd May 2012

It is more than likely that this modern wheel operated well-pump replaced a much older one which had been at the centre of village life in The Square for over 600 years. £5,000 was given by the Essex Environmental Trust as part of the restoration scheme which took two years to complete. It provides an emergency supply of clean water to the village.
