What is known as the Franconian Fountain was proposed to honor Prince Regent Luitpold of Bavaria on his 70th birthday. Originally the figure atop the fountain was to a statue of Luitpold, but he rejected that idea.
That resulted in the figure being an allegorical figure of Franconia. In her left hand she holds the Frankish storm flag, in her right hand she holds a laurel wreath. She faces toward the cathedral. Fortunately the fountain and statue survived the devastating air raid on March 16, 1945. Today she proudly stands before the reconstructed and restored Residenz, a World Heritage site.
