La Maison Foisy
Construite en 1859-1860, la Maison Foisy représente un parfait exemple des petites maisons typiquement canadiennes-françaises érigées en bois, selon la technique de pièce sur pièce souvent présente au Québec.
Elle appartient à l’un des premiers ferblantiers de Bytown, Alexis Foisy, qui l’habite avec sa famille de 1860 à 1876.
Belle à l’intérieur comme à l’extérieur
La belle porte en bois coiffée d’un charmant pignon à chapeau et les fenêtres à nombreux carreaux du premier étage, ainsi que les deux petites lucarnes sur la toiture, ne manquent pas d’attirer le regard des passants.
« Cela étant dit, cette modeste demeure ne se distingue pas seulement par son extérieur, mais également par son intérieur », remarque Michel Prévost.
M. Foisy décore le plafond du premier étage de sa maison avec soin, en y installant des ornements en fer blanc qui lui donnent un aspect unique.
La Maison Foisy demeure l’un des joyaux du patrimoine bâti franco-ontarien des premières décennies d’Ottawa. Après plus de 150 ans, le bâtiment conserve sa vocation première puisqu’il sert toujours de logement.

Built in 1859-1860, the Foisy House is a perfect example of typical small French Canadian wooden houses built according to the technique of piece by piece construction often present in Quebec.
It belongs to one of the first tinsmiths in Bytown, Alexis Foisy, who lived at that location with his family from 1860 to 1876.
The beautiful wooden door crowned by a pinion in the shape of a hat, multi-pane windows and charming gable skylights, do not fail to catch the eyes of passersby.
"That being said, this modest home is distinguished not only by its exterior, but also the interior," says Michel Prévost.
Mr. Foisy carefully decorated the ceiling of his house's first floor by installing tin ornaments that gave it a unique look.
Foisy House remains one of the jewels of the Franco-Ontarian heritage buildings in the first decades of Ottawa. After more than 150 years, the building retains its original purpose given that it is still being used as a dwelling.
