The New Clairvaux Abbey has been producing wines for about 8 years. They grow their own grapes on 500 acres that once belonged to Peter Lassen. His land was a larger estate that stretched from the railroad tracks to the river.

Prohibition put an end to the original winery. Leland Stanford,
another California pioneer also owned the land. The brothers expanded from Kentucky. In 1955 Father Thomas X Davis began the
restoration of the Santa Maria de Ovila Monastery, that was originally from Spain [1190 - 1220].
In 1889, it was the largest winery in the world. William Randolph Hearst purchased the stones and had them shipped to San Francisco.
Over eight thousand, four hundred stones in eleven ships [1931]. World War II precluded
his plan to build a museum in Golden Gate Park or a home at McCloud.
New Clairvaux received a grant from the Hearst Foundation in 1980. Building began in 1994 until 2004. Conditions of the grant were that
the church would be open to the public. There are only 20 of the
Benedictine, Trappist monks.
