Living specimens of the unique species Wollemi Pine were only discovered as recently as 1994 by a bushwalker in the Blue Mountains 200km west of Sydney, New South Wales. Prior to this, the species was known only from the fossil record dating back to the early-mid Cretaceuos period some 1100 million years ago.
With less than 100 adult specimens surviving in the wild, this majestic conifer has been propogated and introduced to horticulture in an attempt to ensure its long-term survival. A specimen was recently obtained by Mandurah City Council and planted in the gardens at the Falcon e-Library as both a landscape feature and educational tool for visitors. The enclosure has educational information on the artwork, and is decorated with sculptures in the form of the fronds of the tree.
