Eine Akropolis an den flachen Gestaden der Ems. Für die Griechen war die Akropolis eine Festung auf dem höchsten Punkt einer Stadt, eine Festung für die Siedlung. In Dörenthe setzt Sabine Hornig ihre Akropolis aus Beton mitten auf die grüne – und auch noch flache Wiese. Der Ort liegt zudem noch näher am Dortmund-Ems-Kanal als an der Ems.

Aber die Ems-Akropolis wirkt. Auch ohne Dekor und trotz nacktem Betonschalguss. Und das mitten und offen in der Landschaft. Boden und Decke sind massiv und markieren einen rechteckigen Raum, dessen schlichte Qualität eines Monuments sich erst fühlen lässt, wenn die Betonskulptur begangen und durchschritten wird.

Über die Beton-Pfeiler und den erfahrbaren Raum der „Emsakropolis“ steuert die Künstlerin den Blick hinaus in die münsterländische Umgebung mit ihren begrenzten Horizonten der Parklandschaft. So stellt die Akropolis die gewohnten Sehweisen auf die Landschaft in Frage. Rahmung, Transparenz, Unzugänglichkeit, Erinnerung und Fiktion sind Schlüsselbegriffe für das Verständnis von Hornigs Werk, bei dem es immer auch um Architektur geht.
