Elma has a population of about 3,100 residents, and there are 25 volunteer firefighters. The station appears clean and orderly, and there are six bays to the fire station.
Elma has had fire fighting equipment since 1891, when a hose cart was delivered to the city, and meetings were held to discuss organizing a volunteer fire department. In 1927, members of Elma's American Legion contacted the City of Centralia and arranged for the fire chief there to come to Elma to train the volunteers. Today, Elma has 25 volunteer firefighters and a Chief that is appointed from the volunteers by the Mayor of Elma, plus a president which is elected by the firefighters. The responsibilities includes responding to structure and wildland fires, vehicle fires and accident, animal rescues, and illegal burning.
