This sculpture depicts the famous actor John Wayne, who appeared in many westerns, on horseback and in cowboy attire. It is set on an oval pedestal about 5 feet high with elaborate reliefs. on its sides.
The Smithsonian Inventory (
visit link) better describes it thusly:
"Full-length portrait of John Wayne riding a horse. He is dressed in western style clothing and wears chaps and a cowboy hat. In his proper right hand he holds a coiled lasso rope. In his proper left hand he holds the reins of the horse. The horse is fully saddled with saddle bags near the back. The horse is walking atop a large bronze boulder. On the sides of the boulder are high-relief scenes of the West. On the proper right side a herd of cattle is being driven by a cowboy on horseback. On the proper left side several cowboys are on horseback while a central figure appears to be mourning a dead compatriot. The sculpture stands on an octagonal stone base."
