"O Ave é um rio português, que nasce na Serra da Cabreira, concelho de Vieira do Minho, a cerca de 1200 m de altitude, no Pau da Bela. Percorre cerca de 85 km até desaguar no Oceano Atlântico, a sul de Vila do Conde. A sua bacia hidrográfica tem uma área aproximada de 1390 km², abrangendo 15 municípios. O rio banha sucessivamente os concelhos de Vieira do Minho, Póvoa de Lanhoso, Guimarães, Vila Nova de Famalicão, Santo Tirso, Trofa e Vila do Conde.

Os seus afluentes mais importantes são o rio Este (margem direita) e o rio Vizela (margem esquerda), destacando-se ainda os rios Pele e Pelhe."

Travels about 85 km before flowing into the Atlantic Ocean, south of Vila do Conde. Its watershed has an area of 1390 km ², covering 15 counties. The river bathes successively the municipalities of Vieira do Minho, Póvoa de Lanhoso, Guimarães, Vila Verde, Santo Tirso, Trofa and Vila do Conde. Its major tributaries are the River East (right bank) and Vizela River (left bank), further highlighting the rivers Pele and Pelhe."
