Temple Bar stood at this point until its removal. It was one of the gateways to the City of London but, due to the narrowness of the gate, it became an obstruction and was dismantled to let the traffic flow easier.

The memorial is highly ornamented and has relief stone carvings on the front and rear sides when looking along Fleet Street. The tops of each carvings on each side read "War" on the left side and "Peace" on the right side. Between these outer carvings is a recessed area with more carving in relief.
Beneath "War" some of the carved items are a soldiers helmet, belts and swords, a soldier with medals on his chest and, at the base, three rifles and a pair of flags.
By contrast, under "Peace" are fruit and berries, a pair of cherubs a rake, a sickle, a scythe and a sheaf of barley.
All of the above is carved in stone.
