Between 1919 and 1950 the town of Hibbing was moved two miles south of its original location because of the expansion of the local iron ore mine. This area is now an historical park dotted with historical signs. Remnants of the former town can be found throughout the park, and a Frisbee golf course has been established, each station at one of the crumbling foundations where historical markers show photos of the original buildings and tell a brief history. There are also two sheltered signboards which tell the stories as well, one at the main park where the Oliver Buildings once stood and the other at the campground area where the North Hibbing village was located.

This is the marker that tells about “Hibbbing – The Town That Moved.” The text reads as follows:

“Hibbing - “The Town That Moved.” From the original tents, tar paper shacks, and log cabins of its 326 residents in 1893, Hibbing grew in population to 10,000 in 1903, Reaching 16,000 hearty souls by 1910.

“By 1919, as the demand for iron ore increased, expanded mining operations surrounded the city on all sides, forcing a move two miles south to a new location. By 1950 the move was complete and North Hibbing ceased to exist. Visit the Hibbing Historical Society in the Memorial Building to view models of Hibbing from that era and to learn more about “the village that moved.”

“Before moving, Hibbing merchants held a giant sale, which included automobile giveaways, reducing the merchandise needed to be transported to their new stores in South Hibbing.
