This old Caterpillar 2 ton crawler tractor has been placed just to the east of the children's play park in the Queen Elizabeth Park in the north-east section of Masterton, alongside a Fordson F.

Caterpillar Inc. traces its origins to the 1925 merger of the Holt Manufacturing Company and the C. L. Best Tractor Company, creating a new entity, the California based Caterpillar Tractor Company. The Caterpillar company consolidated its product lines, offering only five track-type tractors: the 2 Ton, 5 Ton, and 10 Ton from the Holt Manufacturing Company's old product line and the Caterpillar 30 and Caterpillar 60 from the C. L. Best Tractor Co.'s former product line. The 10 Ton and 5 Ton models were discontinued in 1926. In 1928, the 2 Ton was discontinued.' From Wikipedia, see (visit link)

This one is an early model and is missing a lot of the cosmetic bits and pieces and some of the mechanical pieces, but notice the original tiller steering which would be difficult to operate when seated. This was later changed to the 'normal' levers.

One of the pictures in the gallery is what the tractor would have looked like, except that when new the colour would have been Caterpillar Yellow. The picture is from Flickr, Branxholm's photostream, reproduced here with the permission of the owner. Taken on September 26, 2009 at the Waipara Vintage Festival, Canterbury, NZ, using a Sony DSLR-A350.
