On the 3rd of March 2013 this marathon man, Mike Stewart aged 60, ran the annual Mountain To Surf race, 43 years since he ran his first marathon.
The marathon race course runs from the slopes of Mt Taranaki down to the surf at Waitara, a popular downhill course for runners.
Rotorua's Steven O'Callaghan, 31, blitzed the field in the Mountain to Surf marathon and was happy with his time of two hours, 29 minutes and 53 seconds in his first attempt at the course. The first Taranaki runner home in ninth place was New Plymouth's Terry Burnard in 2h55m40s.
However, Mike Stewart, the man that keeps on running, says ""I love doing marathons. The success is crossing the finish line. It doesn't matter how long, it's getting to the finish line that counts."
We were actually spectators at the Finish line of the Mountain To Surf to support a family member doing her first full marathon and the atmosphere was very exciting, seeing the faces of tired competitors light up as they see the end in sight, and the exhilaration as they cross the line is obviously something they will always remember.
