The handsome Classical Revival red brick and stone Carnegie Library building at 201 S National in downtown Fort Scott was built by a grant from the Carnegie Founation issued in 1901. The library opened the next year.

"Carnegie Library" is carved onto the stone pedestals that support the pole lights at the entrance to the building.

Over 111 years later, the building still serves this community as a library.
