Southern Methodist Publishing House was built in 1906 to serve as the headquarter and operation building for the religious book publishing for the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. The organization began in Nashville in 1857. The building served as the headquarters until 1957 when a new headquarters was built elsewhere in the city. The Southern Methodist Publishing has evolved in to the United Methodist Publishing House which include Abingdon Press and Cokesbury which continue to be headquartered in Nashville and are the official publishing house for the United Methodist Church, Presbyterian Church (USA), the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), and the Episcopal Church.
The building has been converted to offices with most having to do with the Federal Courthouse located across the street.
