La Guadeloupe est un archipel. Les liaisons maritimes ont donc toujours joué un rôle fondamental dans son développement. Durant plusieurs siècles, le bateau a même constitué sa seule possibilité de communiquer avec le reste du monde. Dans ce contexte, l'éclairage et le balisage corrects des côtes de la Guadeloupe étaient donc une question vitale.

En mai 1838, la famille Thionville donne à la colonie par acte notarié une parcelle de 50 acres en vue de la construction d'un phare.

Le phare, le premier de la Guadeloupe, s'allume pour la première fois le 9 juillet 1840.

Sa construction, en pierres taillées d'Europe, aura duré plusieurs années. Il est composé d'une colonne cylindrique de 23 mètres de haut qui culmine à environ 35 mètres au dessus du niveau de la mer.

À l'origine, le phare est équipé d'une lanterne à feu fixe d'une porté de 15 milles.
En 1934, le système optique du phare est modernisé, grâce à un feu five blanc éclairé à l'incandescence par la vapeur de pétrole à partir d'un brûleur circulaire.
En 1965, pour adapter le phare à ka nouvelle réglementation maritime, le feu blanc est remplacé par un feu blanc varié par des clignotements groupés par trois. Ce système est obtenu par un système mécanique d'horlogerie faisant tourner l'optique au rythme voulu.

En 1972, les derniers gardiens quittent le phare, il est automatisé et électrifié.
