Castner--Knott Building was built in 1906 as the flagship store for the Nashville based department store chain. The chain later became a division of Mercantile Stores Company, Inc. In later years the store changed names several times due to different acquisitions. The store closed in 1996. At that time the building was converted office and restaurant space.
