Built, 1824-28; the 75-mi.
long route from S.C.
line to Tenn. line, used
by settlers & livestock
drovers, passed nearby.
By the early 1800s farmers in the region had moved from just feeding their families and were raising crops and animals to sell for cash. The job of getting farm animals and crops to the markets of Atlanta, Charleston, and further south was completed by driving the animals on foot thru a string of trails known as drovers’ roads.
In 1828, the Buncombe Turnpike toll road was opened to provide a route that increased traffic through Western North Carolina.
Livestock were driven south on foot from the farms of east TN and NC to cities in SC and further south. Farmers also benifited from the sales of their corn to feed the hungry animals. Also along the turnpike a group of hotels known as stands, provided over night food and lodging for the animals and drovers.
