Stephen Lee was born on June 7, 1801 in South Carolina. In 1819 he entered the United States Military Academy at West Point. He quit two years later even though he ranked fifth in his class. The reason for his resignation is unknown. In 1826 he entered the College of Charleston, where he graduated in 1828. After studying law with his father he opened a legal practice in Charleston.
In 1835 he became a professor of mathematics at the College of Charleston.
In 1846, Stephen Lee opened a school for boys near Asheville. The school remained opened until 1879 and was highly regarded in the area for its academics. Many of the pupils were the children of wealthy SC residents. Lee taught mathematics and literature at the school.
