Kokomo Beach is a recently revamped free-access (no entrance fee) beach located just 10km West of downtown Willemstad, the capital of Curacao.
Its original name was "Vaersenbaai", back when the surrounding terrain belonged to the local Police Department. The area was unfortunately neglected for many years, but after Hurricane Omar in 2008 the area received a complete face-lift: everything above the waterline had an upgrade, and even the name was changed to "Kokomo Beach" in order to reflect its make-over renovations, ready for both local and foreign beach-lovers alike.
Kokomo is one of the few free-entrance beaches remaining on the island. Like most beaches on Curacao, its terrain consists of both fine white sand intermixed with somewhat coarser sand as well as spotty patches of dead coral remains in some specific areas. Services on the terrain itself include a restaurant, a bar, showers and toilets, both a dive shop and a diving school, a massage facility, a shop and even a small mini-museum!
Measuring jsut 100m in length, the beach is rather small. Still, it offers several areas of shade and lounge chairs can be rented for a small fee. There is even a diving platform and greast -- safe! -- parking nearby.
Since its renovation, Kokomo Beach has become one of the most popular beaches at Curacao due to its "modern style" renovations and proximity to the city.
