From English Harbour on the island of Antigua, the navy of England could monitor the French on the island of Guadeloupe. Since before 1704, Fort Berkeley has guarded the entrance to the harbour. Construction of the naval dockyard began in 1740. The busiest period of construction in the dockyard was during the 1780s and 1790s, coinciding with the time when Horatio Nelson was in residence. Nelson's Dockyard National Park is named in his honour. The Dockyard Museum is located in the Naval Officer’s and Clerk’s House which dates from 1855.
