Lovejoy has sold Charlie Gimbert an astrolabe. Unfortunately a couple of dealers challenge its authenticity and Lovejoy is now on the run from an irate Charlie.

Meanwhile a tramp, Jamie, turns up looking for Lovejoy. Jamie used to be well to do, but lost money on the horses and his ex wife took the rest. Jamie still has a Cresswell miniature, but has pawned it for £3375. Lovejoy looks at the miniature at the pawn brokers and reckons it is genuine and worth up to £50,000. The pawnbroker knows it is genuine as well and tries to tell Lovejoy it is a fake. Lovejoy is outraged that the pawn broker is out to swindle Jamie and sets out to help him. He has until 5:30 pm to redeem the pledge.

Lovejoy is short of funds and all his contacts are away, so he starts wheeler dealing around the antiques shops. He rapidly buys and sells antiques to build up the money needed to redeem the miniature. The pawn broker works out what Lovejoy is up to and has Lovejoy arrested. Without evidence the police eventually have to let Lovejoy go.

Lovejoy manages to raise the cash in time, but the pawn broker has managed to steal the paperwork out of Jamie’s pocket. Lovejoy and Jamie manage to get paperwork from a notary, but find that Charlie Gimbert has stolen Lovejoy’s truck. Lovejoy manages to steal Charlie’s Rolls and hares off for the pawnbroker. Jamie and Lovejoy make it to the pawnbrokers just in time and redeem the miniature. Unfortunately Jamie’s ex wife turns up and takes the miniature. Charlie Gimbert crashes Lovejoy’s truck into the ex wife and in the confusion of the crash Lovejoy retakes the miniature for Jamie.
